The Secret to Finding Hidden Water Leaks

3 Major Indicators of a Water Leak

It’s easy to see when a plumbing fixture like a sink or tub faucet is leaking. There are obvious sights or sounds to indicate the problem. When it comes to the inner workings of a home’s plumbing system, it is much harder to see when there is a problem before significant damage is done. There are a few simple checks that a homeowner can do to verify the existence of a hidden leak or broken pipe.

There are a few reasons why someone would hear water running if the tap isn’t on. If a person does hear the rushing of water when they are not expecting it, there are several places to check before assuming that a pipe has burst beneath the home. While these may seem to be common sense, it is always good to have a reminder that panicking is never a good option. Here are a few places to check before calling a plumber:
  • Toilet Tank:If the flushing apparatus is out of whack, the water in the toilet may be running unexpectedly. The flap may not be fully in place, and a simple adjustment can fix the problem.
  • Washing Machine or Dishwasher:If the washing machine or dishwasher is running, there may be a sound of rushing water when the cycle is running. A homeowner should verify that neither of these appliances is running when they fear that there may be a leak.

If none of these locations seem to be the water source, then it may be time to consider calling a professional for water leak repair.

Another clear indication that a home may have an underground leak is if areas in the yard are swampy and never quite seem to dry. This can also be the case if there is an area of the lawn that is particularly green or fast-growing. A yard swamp can indicate the following things:

  • Slab leak
  • Leaking underground drain pipe
  • Leaking underground water pipe

Effects on Water Pressure and Bills

If there is no sound of water running and nothing swampy in the yard, there are two other major signs of a hidden leak. The first is lower than normal water pressure. It is easy to see this in a sink or tub. It also may take longer for a dishwasher or washing machine to run its cycle.

The other indicator of a need for hidden leak repair is an abnormal jump in a home’s water bill. This indicates that water may be escaping from a broken pipe. While broken pipe repair may be expensive, it is not nearly as expensive as allowing an underground leak to go unremedied.

Hidden water leaks can cause serious structural issues and introduce harmful mold and mildew into homes. If a person discovers a water leak, they should take care of it ASAP.
