Why Won’t The Heating System Turn On?

heatingoff

Few things are worse than your heating system not turning on when it’s freezing cold outside. If this happens to you, there are a few things you can do to resolve the problem yourself.

So, don’t call for HVAC service just yet. Try these troubleshooting tips first and be sure to switch off the breaker to your furnace and close the gas valve beforehand.

Pilot Light is Off

“lighton”Check the pilot light. If it is off, light it and check the color of the flame. It should be a strong blue color. When the pilot orifice is dirty, the flame will be yellow. Does the pilot go out right after you light it?

The sensor is probably dirty too. Disassemble and clean the pilot orifice and the sensor. The flame should reach the switch at the bottom of the thermocouple, if not, call in for HVAC service.

Check The Power

Even if you have a gas furnace, you should check to see if the power is on. The component that starts your furnace is powered by electricity. It turns the gas valve on. Ensure that the circuit breaker to the furnace has not tripped.

Check the power cord for any tears or damage. The power switch should be in the “On” position. Also, check the control board to make sure there is not an electrical short circuit.

Thermostat Batteries Are Dead

“checkthermostat”When was the last time you replaced the batteries in your thermostat? If you can’t remember, replace them now.

Make sure the thermostat is set to “Heat” and that the temperature is set higher than room temperature.

Finally, ensure that the thermostat is set to the “On” position.

Check The Thermocouple

The thermocouple is simply a safety device that stops the gas flow when a pilot light is out. If it detects a low temperature, it will not signal the gas flow to the burner and your heating system will not start. Remove the thermocouple to clean it. All thermocouples will wear out eventually, so this could be a sign that yours might need replacement.

Check Your Gas Supply

Turn the power off. Make sure the gas valve is turned up all the way, this way the furnace can start. If no gas is coming into the home, the system will not turn on. Exercise caution when working with gas. If you smell gas, exit the structure and call an expert contractor for HVAC service.

Lack of Yearly Maintenance

“heatingcheckup”Getting your heating system serviced once a year by a reputable contractor is the best way to avoid unexpected problems with your AC system. If you haven’t had any maintenance on your system for over a year, your furnace is probably dirty inside.

Annual maintenance will greatly reduce your chance of system failure. A trained expert can thoroughly check your heating system and all parts inside during annual maintenance.
